Click to WhatsApp Ads: Turn Ad Clicks into Conversations

How click to WhatsApp ads on Facebook and Instagram work, how to plan the first message, answer every chat with a bot and agents, and measure sales.

Click to WhatsApp ads send people from a Facebook or Instagram ad straight into a WhatsApp chat with your business. There is no form to fill and no landing page to load. The customer taps a button, WhatsApp opens, and they can ask their question in their own words. For Indian businesses, where most customers already live on WhatsApp, this often brings more conversations than a lead form. The catch is that every ad click becomes a chat that someone has to answer quickly. This guide explains how click to WhatsApp ads work, how to plan the first message, and how to handle the chats so the ad spend turns into customers.

How click to WhatsApp ads work

In Meta’s ad tools you choose a goal that sends people to messages and pick WhatsApp as the destination. The ad shows a button such as “Send message” or “WhatsApp”. When someone taps it, WhatsApp opens a chat with your business number, often with a short pre-filled greeting the advertiser set up.

A few points that matter in practice (these are Meta’s rules and can change, so check Ads Manager when you set up):

  • The ad runs on Facebook, Instagram or both, from the Facebook Page linked to your WhatsApp number.
  • The customer starts the chat, so the conversation opens a normal customer service window. You can reply freely within it.
  • Meta reports clicks and conversations started in Ads Manager. What happens after that, such as a booking or a sale, you have to track yourself.

You can link an ad to a number on the WhatsApp Business app or on the WhatsApp Business API. For a single shop with one person replying, the app may be enough. Once several people need to answer the same number, or you want a bot to reply first, the API is the better base. See WhatsApp Business API in India for the difference.

Why WhatsApp instead of a lead form

Lead form adClick to WhatsApp ad
What the customer doesFills name, phone, maybe cityTypes a question in WhatsApp
What you getA row in a sheet, often with a wrong numberA live chat with a real WhatsApp number
First contactYour team calls later, often unansweredYou reply in the same chat within minutes
Customer intentMixed, many forms are filled by mistakeHigher, they chose to start a conversation
Effort for your teamCalling listsAnswering chats quickly

The trade-off is speed. A lead form can wait a day. A WhatsApp chat that gets no reply for two hours is usually a lost customer, because they have already messaged your competitor from the next ad.

Plan the first message

The pre-filled greeting and your first reply decide whether the chat goes anywhere.

  • Make the pre-filled text specific. “Hi, I want the price for the 3-day Munnar package” tells you which ad worked and what to send. “Hi” tells you nothing.
  • Use a different greeting per ad set. Like the pre-filled text on click to chat links, it shows which audience and creative brought the chat.
  • Reply with something useful, not “How can I help you?” Send the price range, the brochure or the next available slot, then ask one question.
  • Ask for only what you need. Name and city are enough to start. You already have the phone number.

Answer every chat: bot first, people next

Ads bring chats in bursts, usually in the evening and on weekends when people scroll. A small team cannot answer every one in seconds. A simple setup works well:

  1. A bot greets and qualifies. On BitVoice’s Social Media Platform, a bot flow can send a welcome message with up to 3 buttons, ask questions and save the answers, show a WhatsApp list menu of products or locations, and call your own system through an API step.
  2. The bot hands over. A Handoff step passes the chat to a person, with a reason the agent can see, as soon as the customer asks for one or the answers show a serious buyer.
  3. Agents answer from a shared inbox. WhatsApp, Instagram DMs and website chat arrive in one inbox, so your team does not juggle phones. Read more in shared inbox for WhatsApp and Instagram.
  4. Tags and profiles keep context. Every customer gets a profile from the first message. Agents can tag a chat (for example the campaign name or “hot lead”), and auto-tag rules can label profiles by activity.

If you prefer, intent detection can read the first message and route it: “price” starts the pricing flow, “talk to a person” goes straight to an agent.

After the first day

Most ad chats do not buy on day one. Follow up, but within WhatsApp’s rules.

  • Inside 24 hours of the customer’s last message you can reply freely with text, images, PDFs and buttons.
  • After 24 hours you need an approved template, and the customer should have agreed to hear from you. See WhatsApp template messages and WhatsApp opt-in and quality rating.
  • Do not send the same promotion to everyone who ever clicked. Blocks and reports lower your number’s quality rating, and that can limit how many people you can message.

Some customers will want to talk. A template can carry a “Call on WhatsApp” button, and in Voxdial Contact Center agents answer WhatsApp calls in the same queues as phone calls.

Measure what the ads actually earn

Ads Manager stops counting at “conversation started”. To know which ad sells, track the rest yourself:

  • Tag each chat with the campaign or ad set, using the pre-filled text to tell them apart.
  • Mark the outcome on the profile or in your CRM: qualified, quoted, won, lost.
  • Compare cost per conversation with cost per sale, not just cost per click.
  • Watch reply times on the dashboards. If the first reply is slow in the evening, add a person or let the bot do more.

Common mistakes

  • Running ads before anyone is ready to answer chats.
  • Generic greetings, so you cannot tell which ad brought the chat.
  • Long bot menus that make the customer type “agent” three times.
  • Sending marketing templates to people who only asked one question.
  • Judging ads on clicks instead of on sales.

FAQs

What are click to WhatsApp ads?

They are Facebook or Instagram ads with a button that opens a WhatsApp chat with your business, so the customer can message you directly instead of filling a form.

Do I need the WhatsApp Business API for click to WhatsApp ads?

No, the ads can also point to a WhatsApp Business app number. The API is better when several agents share one number or when you want a bot to reply first.

Can a chatbot reply to chats from ads?

Yes. A bot flow can greet the customer, ask a few questions, show a product list and hand the chat to an agent when needed, all in the same WhatsApp conversation.

How do I know which ad brought a chat?

Give each ad set its own pre-filled message and tag the chats by that text. Then record the outcome of each chat so you can compare sales, not just clicks.
